Electromyography (EMG) allows us to measure the activity and function of the muscles that control your jaw. When these muscles become strained, overactive, or imbalanced, symptoms such as TMJ pain, headaches, clenching, and facial discomfort may occur. EMG helps us identify the source of these issues with greater precision.

What Is EMG?
EMG is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that measures the electrical activity of the muscles involved in jaw movement. By recording how these muscles behave during rest, chewing, or speaking, we can determine whether they are contributing to TMJ problems or bite imbalances.
How EMG Works
Small surface sensors are placed on the skin over the jaw and facial muscles. As you perform simple movements, the sensors detect and record muscle activity. The results appear instantly, giving us valuable information about muscle function and tension patterns.
What EMG Helps Diagnose
– TMJ-related muscular issues
– Clenching and bruxism
– Facial or jaw muscle fatigue
– Imbalanced bite forces
– Headache or neck tension originating from jaw muscles
Why We Use EMG at iDental Dilworth
Understanding how your muscles are functioning allows us to design treatment that addresses the true cause of your discomfort. EMG helps us fine-tune TMJ therapy, adjust bite alignment, create custom oral appliances, and monitor treatment progress over time.
