EMFACE for TMJ & Jaw
EMFACE for Masseter Tension and Jaw Relief
The masseter is the primary muscle you clench with, and when it is overworked it can feel sore, tight, or fatigued. EMFACE is FDA-cleared for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction and works on the jaw muscles through muscle re-education, spasm-symptom relief, blood flow, and range of motion — which is how it relates to masseter tension.
What is the masseter, and why does it get tense?
The masseter is a powerful muscle on the side of the jaw and is "primarily responsible for elevation of the mandible" — in other words, it is the main muscle you close and clench with. Overuse from clenching or grinding can leave it sore, tight, or fatigued.
Because the masseter does so much of the work of biting and clenching, it is often where people feel jaw tension most — as soreness near the back of the jaw, tiredness when chewing, or related headaches. That makes it a natural focus when the goal is jaw relief.
How does EMFACE relate to masseter tension?
EMFACE’s FDA-cleared TMJ indication covers muscle re-education, relief of symptoms associated with muscle spasm, increased local blood flow, and maintenance or improvement of jaw range of motion. Applied to the jaw, its synchronized radiofrequency and HIFES act on the overworked jaw muscles non-invasively.
We keep this precise: EMFACE is cleared for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction and these muscle effects — not marketed as a masseter-slimming or bruxism-curing device. Whether it helps your particular jaw tension is individual and best judged after an evaluation.
How is this different from Botox for the masseter?
Botox injected into the masseter relaxes the muscle and is used off-label for clenching (it is not FDA-approved for that use). EMFACE instead works non-invasively on the jaw muscles and is FDA-cleared for TMJ dysfunction. One relaxes by injection; the other conditions with energy — a difference in mechanism, not a claim of superiority.
Some people specifically want to avoid needles or a neurotoxin, which is part of EMFACE’s appeal. Others prefer the targeted muscle relaxation of an injection. A provider can walk you through both honestly — see EMFACE vs traditional TMJ treatments.
Does masseter treatment change my face shape?
Masseter Botox is sometimes used cosmetically to slim a strong jaw over time by relaxing the muscle. EMFACE is not marketed as a masseter-slimming treatment — its jaw use is about TMJ dysfunction and the muscle effects in its clearance. If jaw contour is your goal, discuss that specifically with your provider.
We describe only EMFACE’s FDA-cleared uses for the jaw. It is not presented as a way to slim the jaw or cure clenching, and results vary from person to person.
Frequently asked questions
- EMFACE is FDA-cleared for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction, which includes relief of symptoms associated with muscle spasm and muscle re-education. Since masseter overuse is a common source of jaw tension, EMFACE works on those muscles — though results are individual and best assessed in person.
- No. Botox relaxes the masseter via injection and is used off-label for clenching; EMFACE works non-invasively on the jaw muscles and is FDA-cleared for TMJ dysfunction. They differ in mechanism, and we do not claim one is more effective than the other.
- EMFACE is not marketed as a masseter-slimming treatment. Its jaw use concerns TMJ dysfunction and the muscle effects in its FDA clearance. If jaw contour is your goal, raise it directly with your provider so expectations are clear.
- A dentist trained in jaw function can examine the chewing muscles and jaw joint to identify where your tension is coming from. That evaluation is the right first step before deciding whether EMFACE or another approach fits.
