How Long Do Veneers Last?
Well-made ceramic veneers are a long-term restoration, not a permanent one. Across pooled clinical studies, ceramic laminate veneers show survival of roughly 96% at about ten years, and a separate review of 6,500 veneers estimated a 95.5% ten-year survival. Fracture is the most common reason one fails.
How long do veneers last, according to the research?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis reported pooled ceramic laminate veneer survival of 97.76% at a mean 2.6 years, 97.12% at 5 years, and 96.05% at a mean 10.4 years. A separate 2021 systematic review of 6,500 veneers across 25 studies estimated a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 95.5%.
Two things are worth drawing out of those numbers. The first is that they are survival rates — the proportion of veneers still in service, not the proportion that still look brand new. The second is that they come from clinical studies, which means well-selected cases, carefully made restorations, and patients who came back for follow-up. Your own result depends on your bite, your habits, and how the case is planned.
It is also why nobody honest will quote you a guaranteed number of years. A veneer on a front tooth in a person with a comfortable, well-distributed bite is in a very different situation from the same veneer in someone who clenches through the night.
What actually makes a veneer fail?
Fracture is the most common complication, followed by debonding — the veneer coming loose. Both tend to happen in the earlier years after cementation rather than at the end of a long service life. Decay under the veneer and the need for root-canal treatment are comparatively rare.
The 2021 review looked at each failure mode on its own and reported these ten-year cumulative survival rates when that complication alone was counted as failure:

Read together, that says something useful: the main risk to a veneer is mechanical — force. It is much less often biological. Which is why how your teeth come together matters more to the lifespan of a veneer than almost anything else.
Does the material change how long they last?
Less than people expect. At a mean 10.4 years the 2024 meta-analysis found 96.13% survival for feldspathic porcelain, 93.7% for leucite-reinforced glass ceramic, and 96.81% for lithium disilicate — and reported no significant difference between materials. Zirconia veneers showed 100% survival at 2.6 years, but there is no long-term data yet.
The practical reading is that material choice is mostly an aesthetic and situational decision — how much light needs to pass through, how much tooth is left, how much strength the case demands — rather than a longevity decision. What shortens the life of a veneer?
- Clenching and grinding. The ADA is direct about this: if you clench or grind your teeth, or have a deep overbite, veneers may not be a good choice. That does not always mean no — it means the bite has to be understood and managed first. More on this in veneers and your bite.
- An unmanaged bite. Where the teeth meet, and where they meet first, decides how force lands on a thin ceramic shell.
- Using teeth as tools. Opening packaging, biting nails, chewing ice and pens.
- Contact sports without a mouthguard.
- Gum recession over time, which can expose the margin where the veneer meets the tooth.
What happens when a veneer does reach the end of its life?
It is repaired, re-bonded, or replaced. Because enamel is removed to place a veneer, the tooth will need some form of covering from then on — the ADA describes veneer treatment as not reversible. Planning for eventual replacement is part of choosing veneers, not a sign something went wrong.
The honest summary
Ceramic veneers are a long-term restoration with strong long-term data behind them, and the main threat to them is force rather than decay. That is a reason to take the bite seriously at the planning stage, not a reason to avoid veneers.

- Some do, but the published evidence does not extend that far with confidence. The largest pooled analyses report survival at around 5 and 10 years — roughly 96% at a mean 10.4 years for ceramic veneers. Beyond ten years the number of studies drops sharply, so anyone quoting a firm twenty-year figure is going beyond the evidence.
- Often, yes. A single veneer can usually be replaced on its own. The practical challenge is shade matching — a new veneer next to older neighbours has to be matched to how those neighbours look now, not how they looked when they were placed.
- Porcelain itself is highly stain resistant; it does not absorb pigment the way natural tooth structure and composite resin do. What can discolour is the margin where the veneer meets the tooth, and the natural tooth structure around it. Composite veneers are more prone to surface staining and marginal discolouration.
- Not usually. Veneers tend to fail individually rather than as a set, and the studies bear this out — failures accumulate gradually rather than arriving together. Planning tends to assume individual replacement over time.
