Charlotte, N.C. ·

iDental Dilworth, a cosmetic and neuromuscular dental practice in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood, is now offering EMFACE for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction — a needle-free, non-invasive option for patients living with jaw pain, tension, and related headaches. It follows the FDA’s August 2025 clearance of EMFACE for this use.

What changed

In August 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared EMFACE — a device best known as a needle-free alternative to injectables for facial toning — for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. (It is FDA-*cleared*, the correct term for this kind of device, not "approved.") In effect, a cosmetic device gained a medical use.

The clearance specifically opened the door to dental and facial-wellness providers to address TMJ dysfunction with EMFACE. iDental Dilworth is now offering it — placing the practice among the first in Charlotte to bring facial aesthetics and jaw-pain care together in a single treatment, under a dentist trained in both.

What EMFACE for TMJ is cleared to do

For the jaw, EMFACE is FDA-cleared for the relief of symptoms associated with muscle spasm, treatment of TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, muscle re-education, increased local blood flow, and the maintenance or improvement of mandibular range of motion. The practice describes only these cleared uses and does not claim outcomes beyond them.

EMFACE works by pairing synchronized radiofrequency, which gently warms the skin, with high-intensity facial electrical stimulation (HIFES), which selectively contracts the muscles. For TMJ, that technology is aimed at the jaw muscles. Sessions are non-invasive and require no downtime.

Why it matters for Charlotte patients

TMJ disorders are common and often frustrating to treat. An estimated 5 to 12 percent of U.S. adults live with a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, according to the NIH’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and many spend years moving between providers in search of relief.

The practice frames the clearance as a chance to address jaw discomfort and facial appearance together, in one place, rather than as two separate problems handled in two separate offices — an approach it describes as treating the smile, jaw, and face as one connected system. It emphasizes that a non-invasive, in-office option may change the conversation for patients who have found other paths to relief complicated or invasive.

Why a neuromuscular dentist

TMJ dysfunction centers on the jaw joint and the muscles that move it — the anatomy a neuromuscular dentist evaluates. iDental Dilworth is led by Dr. Kate Sudikoff, DMD, a graduate of Boston University, a Fellow of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, and an established EMFACE provider.

Dr. Sudikoff’s training in neuromuscular dentistry — the study of how the bite, muscles, and jaw joint function together — lets a single visit consider both the cosmetic and the FDA-cleared TMJ use of EMFACE. Learn more about EMFACE for TMJ or the practice’s TMJ treatment approach.

Individual results

iDental Dilworth evaluates each patient individually and emphasizes that results vary. The practice recommends a consultation to determine whether EMFACE or another approach is appropriate. This announcement is for general information and is not medical advice.
