EMFACE vs Microcurrent Facials (Like NuFACE)
Microcurrent facials and EMFACE both stimulate facial muscle, which is why they are compared — but the similarity is mostly on the surface. Microcurrent uses gentle, low-level current for a subtle, temporary effect that depends on frequent use. EMFACE uses much higher-intensity HIFES stimulation plus synchronized radiofrequency in a clinical device.
What’s the difference between EMFACE and microcurrent?
Microcurrent devices (like NuFACE) use low-level electrical current to gently stimulate the facial muscles, producing a largely temporary toning effect that relies on regular, ongoing use. EMFACE uses high-intensity HIFES stimulation plus radiofrequency — a far stronger, clinic-based treatment.
EMFACE vs microcurrent at a glance
| EMFACE | Microcurrent (e.g., NuFACE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Intensity | High-intensity HIFES contractions | Low-level current, sub-sensory to gentle |
| Skin component | Yes — synchronized radiofrequency | No radiofrequency |
| Where | In-office clinical device | Often at-home handheld devices |
| Durability | Builds over ~3 months; periodic maintenance | Temporary; needs frequent ongoing use |
| Downtime | None | None |
How microcurrent works
Microcurrent delivers a very low level of electrical current intended to mimic the body’s own signals and gently stimulate facial muscles and cellular activity. The effect is subtle and generally temporary, which is why at-home microcurrent is marketed for frequent, ongoing use.
It is a low-commitment, gentle approach — many devices are designed for home use several times a week. What it does not include is radiofrequency for the skin, or the high-intensity contractions that define HIFES.
How EMFACE differs
EMFACE operates at a much higher intensity than microcurrent and adds synchronized radiofrequency for the skin. It is a clinical, in-office device delivered in a structured series, with measured changes in wrinkle score and muscle tone at three months in published studies.
Think of microcurrent as a gentle, frequent maintenance habit and EMFACE as a stronger, structured treatment course. They are not the same technology, and EMFACE’s HIFES is distinct from the low-level current in a home device.
Is one right for me?
If you want a gentle at-home routine, microcurrent may suit you. If you want a clinical treatment with published outcomes and a provider guiding it — especially if the jaw or TMJ is also part of your picture — EMFACE is a different level of intervention. A consultation helps set the right expectation.
It is a common myth that EMFACE is "just a stronger NuFACE." The intensity is different, and EMFACE adds radiofrequency the skin — see EMFACE myths vs facts.
Frequently asked questions
- Not exactly. EMFACE uses high-intensity HIFES muscle stimulation and adds synchronized radiofrequency for the skin, in a clinical device. Microcurrent uses low-level current with no radiofrequency and a gentler, temporary effect. They are different technologies, not the same tool at different strengths.
- They serve different purposes. A home microcurrent device offers gentle, frequent maintenance; EMFACE is a stronger, structured clinical treatment with published outcomes. One does not replace the other, though some people use microcurrent between professional treatments.
- Microcurrent effects are largely temporary and rely on frequent use. EMFACE results build over about three months and typically involve periodic maintenance. Neither is permanent, but they operate on different timescales and intensities.
- Microcurrent is very gentle. EMFACE is stronger and produces noticeable muscle contractions, though studies rated discomfort as low. Comfort is individual — if it matters to you, discuss it with your provider, who can adjust settings.
