Does EMFACE Really Work? What the Evidence Shows

By Dr. Kathryn Sudikoff, DMDLVI Fellow · Neuromuscular Dentistry

Peer-reviewed studies report that EMFACE improves measured wrinkle scores and facial-muscle tone by the three-month mark. There is also an important caveat: every one of those studies has been funded by or authored with the manufacturer, and the samples are small. Here are the actual numbers and what they do and do not prove.

Does EMFACE actually work?

The published studies say yes for measured wrinkles and muscle tone at three months — with a caveat. In a 33-person study, average wrinkle scores improved about 35% at three months; a separate study measured about a 31% improvement in facial-muscle tone. Both were small and manufacturer-linked, so the evidence is early, not definitive.

We think the honest framing is: real signals, early evidence. EMFACE is not snake oil — there is objective measurement behind it — but it also has not been validated by large, independent, long-term trials yet.

What do the wrinkle studies show?

The Robb 2025 multicenter study of 33 people measured wrinkle-score improvement of about 20% immediately, 23% at one month, and 35% at three months using 3D analysis, with 88% improving by at least one grade and most participants satisfied. A separate 2024 trial of 24 people reported a similar ~37% improvement at three months.

These are consistent, measured results across two studies — which is meaningful. They are also both small and connected to the manufacturer, which is why we cite the exact numbers rather than a rounded marketing figure.

What about muscle tone?

A 2025 ultrasound pilot study of about 10 people measured facial-muscle "echo intensity" improving roughly 31% at three months — an objective sign of better muscle tone in the forehead and cheek muscles. A porcine (animal) histology study also reported structural muscle change.

So there is measurement behind both sides of EMFACE’s mechanism — skin (wrinkles) and muscle (tone). The muscle study is very small, which we note plainly.

What are the honest limitations?

  • Every EMFACE efficacy study to date is funded by or authored with BTL, the manufacturer.
  • Sample sizes are small — roughly 10 to 33 people.
  • Follow-up in the published studies ends at three months, so long-term durability is not established.
  • No large, fully independent trial has confirmed the findings yet.

None of this means EMFACE does not work — it means the evidence is early and should be described honestly. Be cautious of any site quoting dramatic percentages ("37% wrinkle reduction, 30% muscle tone, 23% lift") as if they are settled fact; we prefer the traceable study figures above. See EMFACE myths vs facts.

The honest verdict: EMFACE has real, published evidence of measured improvement at three months, from small manufacturer-linked studies. That is promising, not proven at the level of large independent trials — and any provider who tells you it is guaranteed is overstating it.
