What to Expect at Your First EMFACE Session

By Dr. Kathryn Sudikoff, DMDLVI Fellow · Neuromuscular Dentistry

Your first EMFACE session is straightforward and needle-free. After a quick check-in, soft applicators are positioned on your forehead and cheeks, and for about 20 minutes you feel a warm sensation with rhythmic muscle contractions. There is no downtime — most people head straight back to their day.

What happens at a first EMFACE appointment?

You will confirm your goals, have the applicators positioned and secured on the treatment areas, and then relax for about 20 minutes while EMFACE delivers synchronized radiofrequency and HIFES. Afterward, the applicators come off and you are free to go — no recovery, no bandages.

If it is truly your first visit, it usually begins with a short consultation to confirm candidacy and review your health history. Some practices do the consultation and first session together; others separate them. Either way, nothing about the appointment is invasive.

Do I need to prepare?

Very little. Arrive with clean skin and no heavy makeup on the treatment areas if possible, and mention any recent injectables, skin treatments, or changes to your health. Because EMFACE cannot be applied over metal or electronic implants, your provider confirms there are none in the area.

  • Come with the treatment areas clean; makeup is typically removed before applicators go on.
  • Tell your provider about recent Botox, filler, or skin treatments so timing can be planned.
  • Flag any implants, devices, or health changes during check-in.
  • Plan nothing special afterward — you can return to work or errands.

What does it feel like during the session?

You feel a warm sensation from the radiofrequency and a tapping or pulling as the HIFES stimulates your facial muscles to contract. It is a novel feeling — your forehead and cheeks move on their own — but studies rated discomfort as low, and most people find it easy to relax through.

The applicators are hands-free once placed, so you can rest, listen to music, or simply close your eyes. The muscle contractions come in cycles rather than continuously, which most people adjust to within the first few minutes.

What happens right after?

You can resume normal activities immediately. Some people notice mild, temporary warmth or slight redness that fades quickly. There is no bruising to hide and no recovery period — one reason EMFACE is popular with busy people.

Because results build gradually, you should not expect a dramatic change after a single session. The full course is four sessions about a week apart, with measured improvement building toward three months.

How many sessions will I book?

The standard series is four 20-minute sessions spaced roughly a week apart — the protocol used in the clinical studies. Your provider will confirm your plan and discuss whether periodic maintenance makes sense for your goals.
