What Areas Does EMFACE Treat? Brow, Cheeks, and Jawline
The classic EMFACE treatment addresses the upper and mid face — the forehead and brow, and the cheeks and midface — using pads placed on those areas. BTL also makes dedicated applicators for the under-chin ("Submentum") and the eye area, extending the same synchronized radiofrequency and HIFES approach.
What areas does EMFACE treat?
The standard EMFACE treatment targets the forehead/brow and the cheeks/midface. Dedicated applicators extend it to the under-chin (Submentum) and the eye area. Each uses the same synchronized radiofrequency plus HIFES muscle stimulation described by BTL.
The forehead and brow
On the forehead, EMFACE stimulates the frontalis — the muscle that lifts the brow. By conditioning that muscle and warming the overlying skin, the treatment aims for a subtly more lifted, open look in the upper face.
The frontalis is one of the two muscles measured in EMFACE’s ultrasound research, where tone improved at three months. If a heavy or hooded upper face is your main concern, read EMFACE for the brow for a fuller discussion of what the lifting effect can and cannot do.
The cheeks and midface
In the midface, EMFACE works the zygomaticus major — the muscle that lifts the corner of the mouth and cheek when you smile. Toning this support muscle, along with skin-directed radiofrequency, is aimed at a firmer, more supported midface.
The zygomaticus is the second muscle measured in the ultrasound study, alongside the frontalis. Together the forehead and cheeks make up the core EMFACE treatment that most published research is based on.
The under-chin and jawline (EMFACE Submentum)
BTL makes an EMFACE Submentum applicator for the area under the chin — the "double-chin" region and jawline. It is designed to address the muscle, skin, and appearance of that area, extending EMFACE below the midface.
If a softening jawline or under-chin fullness is your concern, see EMFACE for jowls and a sagging jawline. As with the rest of the face, EMFACE addresses early-to-moderate changes through tone and skin quality — it is not a surgical jaw or neck lift.
The eye area
BTL also offers an eye-area applicator ("EMFACE Eyes") that extends the approach to the region around the eyes. As with any delicate area, candidacy and expectations are individual and best assessed in person.
Which areas are right for me?
Most people start with the forehead and cheeks, and add the under-chin or eye area based on their goals. Because each face is different, the right combination is something we map out at a consultation — honestly, and without upselling areas you do not need.
EMFACE addresses tone and skin quality in these areas. For significant sagging, loose neck skin, or deep structural changes, a non-surgical treatment like EMFACE is not a replacement for surgery — we will tell you if that is the case.
Frequently asked questions
- EMFACE’s under-chin applicator (Submentum) addresses the area beneath the chin and along the jawline. Significant neck laxity or loose neck skin is generally a surgical concern rather than something a non-invasive treatment resolves — a consultation clarifies which applies to you.
- EMFACE stimulates the frontalis, the brow-lifting muscle, and can support a subtly more lifted upper-face appearance. It is not a surgical brow lift and will not correct significant hooding. Results are gradual and individual.
- Yes. Many people combine the forehead and cheeks, and some add the under-chin or eye area. Your provider will recommend a combination based on your goals and anatomy at your consultation.
- The published EMFACE studies focused on the forehead (frontalis) and cheeks (zygomaticus), measuring wrinkle and muscle-tone changes at three months. The under-chin and eye applicators are newer extensions of the same technology.
