EMFACE vs Dermal Fillers: Volume vs Tone

By Dr. Kathryn Sudikoff, DMDLVI Fellow · Neuromuscular Dentistry

Dermal fillers and EMFACE are easy to confuse because both aim to refresh the face — but they solve different problems. Fillers add volume by injecting a gel, usually hyaluronic acid, into a specific area. EMFACE adds no volume; it tones the facial muscles and stimulates the skin, without needles.

What’s the difference between EMFACE and fillers?

Fillers restore or add volume — they physically fill a hollow, crease, or lip with an injected gel. EMFACE does not add volume; it uses HIFES to tone facial muscle and radiofrequency to stimulate the skin. One is about structure and volume; the other is about tone and skin quality.

How dermal fillers work

A dermal filler is a gel — most commonly cross-linked hyaluronic acid — injected into a targeted area to add volume and support. It can restore a hollow cheek, soften a deep fold, or define a feature. Results are immediate and last months to a year or more, depending on the product and area.

Fillers are precise volumizers. They excel where the issue is lost or absent volume. But they do not tone muscle or improve overall skin quality — and if over-used, they can look "overfilled," which is the opposite of what many people want.

How EMFACE differs

EMFACE addresses tone rather than volume. By conditioning the support muscles and stimulating collagen and elastin in the skin, it aims for a firmer, more refreshed surface — a subtler, more gradual effect than the immediate change of a filler.

Because it adds nothing and freezes nothing, EMFACE is often described as looking natural. It will not replace volume that is genuinely lost, though — which is exactly why the two are sometimes used together.

Which one do I need?

If your concern is a specific hollow or a deep fold, a filler may be the more direct answer. If it is overall firmness, tone, and skin quality, EMFACE is aimed at that. Many faces have both issues — which is why a combined plan is common.

See combining EMFACE with Botox and filler for how these can work together, and read what EMFACE realistically does so your expectations match the treatment.

A good provider will not sell you a filler when you need toning, or EMFACE when you need volume. Matching the tool to the problem is the whole point of an honest consultation.
