Do You Still Need Botox or Filler With EMFACE?

By Dr. Kathryn Sudikoff, DMDLVI Fellow · Neuromuscular Dentistry

EMFACE, Botox, and fillers address different things — tone, muscle movement, and volume — so the honest answer to "do I still need injectables?" is often "it depends on your goals." Many people combine them, using each for what it does best. Others simplify. Here is how they fit together.

Do EMFACE and injectables compete or complement?

They mostly complement. EMFACE tones muscle and stimulates skin; Botox relaxes specific expression muscles; fillers add volume. Because the mechanisms differ, clinicians commonly layer them rather than treat them as either/or.

That said, "complementary" is how experienced providers describe it — not a claim from a controlled head-to-head trial. What is clear is that these treatments do genuinely different things, so combining them is a reasonable strategy when your goals span more than one issue.

When you might still want Botox

If you have a specific dynamic wrinkle — frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet — that bothers you, Botox targets that directly by relaxing the muscle. EMFACE tones muscle rather than relaxing it, so it will not soften a specific expression line the same way.

Some people find that as their overall tone improves, they adjust how much Botox they want; others keep both. There is no single right answer — it depends on which lines you care about and how you like to look.

When you might still want filler

If your concern is genuine volume loss — a hollow cheek or under-eye, a deep fold — a filler restores that directly. EMFACE does not add volume, so it will not replace filler where volume is truly missing. The two address different layers of the same face.

A thoughtful plan might use filler for a specific hollow and EMFACE for overall tone — each doing its own job, so neither is overused. That is often how a natural result is achieved.

How are they sequenced?

Timing matters. Providers commonly space EMFACE and injectables — often treating injectables and then allowing a short interval (frequently around two weeks) so any swelling or bruising resolves. Your provider will plan the order based on what you are having and when.

The key is not to layer treatments on your own timeline. Tell your provider everything you have had and when, and let them build a sequence that keeps each treatment safe and effective.

Could EMFACE let me simplify?

For some people, improving overall muscle tone and skin quality reduces how much they rely on injectables — but this is individual, not guaranteed. The goal is not to use the most treatments; it is to use the right ones for your face. An honest consultation is where that plan gets made.

Combining treatments should be a plan, not an accident. We would rather help you use fewer, well-chosen treatments than stack everything — the aim is a natural result, not a full menu.
