EMFACE vs Emsculpt: The BTL Family, Clarified
EMFACE, Emsculpt, Emtone, and Emsella all come from BTL and share the "Em" prefix, which causes a lot of confusion. They are different devices for different parts of the body. EMFACE treats the face; Emsculpt builds body muscle; Emtone targets cellulite and skin; Emsella addresses the pelvic floor.
Are EMFACE and Emsculpt the same thing?
No. They share a manufacturer (BTL) and a naming style, but they are different devices for different areas. EMFACE treats the face using HIFES plus radiofrequency; Emsculpt treats body muscle (like the abdomen or buttocks) using a different technology called HIFEM.

HIFES vs HIFEM: an important distinction
The acronyms look alike but are not the same. HIFES (High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) is EMFACE’s facial technology. HIFEM (used by Emsculpt and Emsella) is a high-intensity electromagnetic technology for larger body and pelvic muscles. Different technologies for very different muscles.
This matters because you will sometimes see the two used interchangeably online. The face needs a gentler, more precise approach than the abdomen — which is exactly why BTL built a separate facial system rather than using the body device on the face.
Why do people confuse them?
The confusion is understandable: the shared "Em" branding, the common theme of muscle stimulation, and the similar-sounding acronyms (HIFES and HIFEM) blur together. But the differences are real — the face needs a system designed for delicate, precise facial muscles, which is why a separate device exists.
It does not help that some marketing uses the names loosely. When you see "muscle-building facial treatment," the facial device is EMFACE — the body devices were never intended for the face. Knowing the distinction protects you from booking the wrong treatment for your goal.
Can I use more than one device from the family?
Some people do use different BTL devices for different areas — for example, EMFACE for the face and a body device elsewhere — because they treat separate regions and do not overlap. That is a decision for a provider who offers those treatments, based on your goals for each area.
What you would not do is use a body device on the face or vice versa. Each is engineered, powered, and FDA-cleared for its own area, so they are complementary across the body rather than interchangeable on the same spot.
Which one do I need?
Match the device to the area: EMFACE for the face and jaw, Emsculpt for body muscle, Emtone for cellulite and body-skin laxity, Emsella for pelvic-floor concerns. They are not substitutes for one another — you choose based on what you want to treat.

If someone tells you "Emsculpt for your face," be cautious — the facial treatment is EMFACE, with its own facial technology. The names are similar on purpose, but the devices are not interchangeable.
