Is EMFACE Safe? Side Effects and What’s Normal

By Dr. Kathryn Sudikoff, DMDLVI Fellow · Neuromuscular Dentistry

EMFACE is a non-invasive, needle-free treatment with no required downtime, and in published studies most people reported it as comfortable with no serious adverse events. Like any energy-based device it has sensible precautions — notably around metal or electronic implants — and your provider screens for those before you begin.

Is EMFACE safe?

For suitable candidates, EMFACE has a reassuring early safety profile: it uses no needles and requires no downtime, and the published clinical studies reported low discomfort and no serious adverse events. As with any treatment, safety depends on proper screening and an experienced provider.

It is worth being clear-eyed: the studies to date are small and manufacturer-linked, so the safety data is early rather than exhaustive. What they consistently show is a well-tolerated, non-invasive experience — which matches the mechanism, since nothing is injected or cut.

What does EMFACE feel like?

You typically feel two things at once: a gentle warmth from the radiofrequency and a tapping or contracting sensation from the HIFES muscle stimulation. In studies, average discomfort was rated very low, and most participants described the treatment as comfortable.

The muscle-contraction feeling is unusual at first — your forehead or cheeks move on their own — but it is not painful for most people. Sessions run about 20 minutes, and you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities right away.

What are the possible side effects?

BTL lists the potential for temporary skin effects — described as "crust, blister, and burn" — as a possible side effect of the radiofrequency energy. In the clinical studies these were not common, but any device that heats tissue carries a small risk, which is why provider technique matters.

Most people experience nothing more than mild, short-lived redness or a warm feeling that fades. If you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions to heat-based treatments, tell your provider — it is part of a responsible screening conversation.

Who should not have EMFACE?

BTL states EMFACE should not be applied over hair or scar tissue, or if you have electronic or metal implants. Providers also typically avoid treatment during pregnancy and in people with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers. Your provider reviews your history to confirm you are a safe candidate.

  • Electronic or metal implants in the treatment area (per BTL’s stated caution).
  • Implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators (a standard precaution for energy-based devices).
  • Pregnancy (commonly avoided as a precaution).
  • Active skin infection, open lesions, or significant skin conditions in the area — discuss with your provider.

This is not a complete medical list, and it is not a substitute for a personal evaluation. The point is simple: a good provider asks the right questions first. At our practice, Dr. Kate reviews your health history before recommending EMFACE.

Is the TMJ use safe too?

The same device and the same non-invasive, needle-free approach apply to the FDA-cleared EMFACE for TMJ use. The precautions above still apply, and a dentist trained in jaw function is well placed to screen and monitor when the goal is jaw relief rather than appearance.

A fair expectation

No treatment is risk-free, and no honest provider will tell you otherwise. EMFACE’s risks are low for suitable candidates — the most important safeguard is being screened properly and treated by someone experienced.
